Dear Researchers, the Polish Journal of Political Science announces a call for papers for a thematic issue entitled Material Remains of the Past and Political Frameworks: Archaeology in the Perspective of Politics, Law, and Security.
Brief Introduction
Archaeology is increasingly no longer perceived solely as a discipline examining material remains of the past in their chronological, cultural, and civilizational dimensions. Contemporary archaeology is also becoming a crucial field of reflection on the relationships between material heritage and the state, law, collective memory, and security. Artifacts, archaeological sites, and cultural landscapes function not only as objects of scientific research but also as symbolic, legal, economic, and geopolitical resources.
This thematic issue aims to create an interdisciplinary space for debate on the political and institutional involvement of archaeology. We are interested both in how the material past is constructed, protected, interpreted, and instrumentalized by contemporary political entities, and in how archaeology participates in the processes of establishing norms, legitimizing social orders, building identities, and responding to crises. The starting point for this thematic issue is the belief that archaeology is an important source of knowledge not only about past societies but also about contemporary mechanisms for managing the past. Archaeological heritage remains an area of intense tension: between protection and exploitation, science and historical policy, the common good and private property, social memory and instrumental narratives, heritage protection and the realities of conflict. Questions about the role of states and international organizations in heritage protection, the legal foundations of archaeological resource management, the consequences of armed conflicts and disasters for archaeological sites and collections, and the use of archaeological narratives in ideological, national, and territorial disputes are particularly relevant today.
We invite submissions that explore archaeology from the perspective of political science, legal studies, security studies, international relations, the history of ideas, political anthropology, heritage studies, and related research fields. We accept theoretical and problem-based articles, as well as case study analyses, comparative texts, and empirically based studies.

Submission of Manuscript
All manuscripts submitted will be considered for publication. Manuscripts should be sent an email attachment citing “Thematic Issue – Material Remains of the Past and Political Frameworks: Archaeology in the Perspective of Politics, Law, and Security” to Mateusz DREWICZ at mateusz.drewicz@amu.edu.pl till the 18th of September.
